to the water resources, clean air, environmental protection,
MAFF codes of good
agricultural practice, the Health and Safety Executive, wildlife
and countryside acts and the relevant EEC regulations.
The
company is striving to reduce the amount of chemicals used
in the growing of their crops. Extensive trials have been
carried out over the last few years with Garlic to deter Cabbage
root fly. It is being tested in different formats in an effort
to reduce the amount of chemicals currently being used for
a more environmentally friendly natural product. These trials
are being carried out in conjunction with Plymouth University
and Dr. Murray Groom of Eco-spray, varying degrees of success
have so far been achieved.
KS
Coles take their environmental responsibilities seriously.
Independant consultants from the Farming
and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) and Linking
Environment and Farming (LEAF) have carried out successful
onsite audits.
The
Farming and
Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) was formed by a group of
farmers and conservationists in 1969 to promote environmentally
responsible farming and conservation. Their inclusive view
of conservation includes wildlife, the habitat, the landscape,
and public access issues. They also provide guidance and updates
on technical developments within the industry including matters
such as the responsible and safe application of agricultural
chemicals, waste management and pollution control.
KS
Coles are a member of Linking
Environment and Farming (LEAF) who are major promoters
of Integrated Farm Management (IFM) systems. These common
sense practices combine traditional methods with modern technology
to deliver a balanced approach to crop production with positive
environmental management.
